Organization and management

Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun, owners of the Sustainability Initiative, are responsible for the financing, monitoring and measuring which are involved. The owners communicate directly with the Supervisory Board, which is responsible for how the Initiative is conducted. Finally, the Initiative Management answers directly to the Supervisory Board, and also acts according to requirements set by the Board. The Initiative Management is in charge of general website maintenance and sees to collecting website data, reviewing and developing the indicators, introducing the indicators and promoting the Initiative, as well as communicating with the academic community.

Supervisory Board

The roles of the Supervisory Board are the following:

  • To prepare an action plan / budget for each year. The Initiative owners, Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun, have the final say on the amount of capital channeled into the program, and the Supervisory Board prioritizes undertakings accordingly.
  • To oversee the Initiative Management and follow up the budget and action plan
  • To propose suggestions for changes / new indicators whenever appropriate, in addition to deciding on any suggestions that might be received
  • To decide on publishing and promotional matters
  • To bear responsibility for the topics and contents of the Initiative's annual general meeting
  • Anything else related to regular management of the Sustainability Initiative

Initiative management

The Initiative Managers have the roles of:

  • Gathering and processing data, preparing and organizing meetings, and working with the Supervisory Board on the whole assortment of Sustainability Initiative promotions.
  • Maintaining and operating the Initiative website, which includes for instance the gathering and entering of data as well as updating the website
  • Organizing and participating in meetings which introduce the Sustainability Initiative to its owners
  • Organizing and participating in meetings which introduce the Sustainability Initiative to stakeholders, such as companies, social organizations and municipal council members 
  • Performing other incidental tasks which Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun might assign to them.

 

Austurbrú has seen to Sustainability Initiative Management since January 2013.

Rules of procedure

Implementation of the Sustainability Initiative has brought to light an assortment of issues that demand a professional approach and has shown the importance of formulating rules that can ensure open, transparent processes in keeping with the idea of broad consultation.

The fourth Advisory Group meeting laid the foundations for two rules of procedure to follow when amending or developing the Initiative. One of these rules deals with the process of modifying the sustainability indicators, the other with holding the annual general meetings.
