Ánægja starfsfólks vísir 1-2Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun have commissioned Capacent Gallup to perform job satisfaction surveys among their employees for the past few years. The results can be seen on this page.

The grade scale is from 0 to 5. No survey was performed for Alcoa Fjarðaál in 2009 and none for Landsvirkjun in 2010 and 2012.

Average of companies involved:
Capacent Gallup calculates the average score of all companies participating in their surveys within a 5-year period. The average  is updated once or twice a year. Usually the changes are very small (0.01 to 0.03). When the survey was conducted at Alcoa Fjarðaál in 2015 the average of the database was 4.25.

Gallup's Comparison scales:
Strong scale: The statement scores 4.2 or above in the scale 1-5.
Acceptable scale: The statement scores 3.7-4.9 or above in the scale 1-5.
Action scale: The statement scores 3.69 or less in the scale 1-5.

What is measured?

Annual Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun employee survey on workplace and job satisfaction (Project effect: direct).

Monitoring protocol


 Capacent  conducts surveys within companies. Data is collected annually.


Targets

Fljótsdalsstöð power station: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale.

Alcoa Fjarðaál: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale.


Possible countermeasures

The companies have issued human resources policies.



Changes to indicator

At annual meeting of the initiative 2014 the following changes was approved regarding the monitoring protocol:


Monitoring protocol before changes:

Gallup conducts surveys within companies and allso rely on  surveys within VR union. Data is collected annually.

Monitoring protocol after changes:

Capacent Gallup conducts surveys within companies. Data is collected annually.


Targets before changes:

  • Fljótsdalsstöð power station: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale (blue area).
  • Alcoa Fjarðaál: Among five higest score country-wide in VR survey.

Targest after changes:

  • Fljótsdalsstöð power station: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale.
  • Alcoa Fjarðaál: 4.2 or higher on Gallup scale.


In the forth phase of the initiative it was decided to change the numbers of the sustainability indicators.  This indicator was originally number 3.1 and is referenced as 3.1 in early documents of the project.

Rationale for Indicator Selection


Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun can have a direct effect on their employees' welfare. A workforce that is content with its workplace and experiences high job satisfaction will have a higher retention rate than a discontented group of employees.

The long term retention of Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun employees increases the economic stability of the Kárahnjúkar and Fjarðaál areas. By conducting an annual employee survey on workplace and job satisfaction Alcoa Fjarðaál and Landsvirkjun will be able to monitor employee attitudes and, where necessary, implement changes.
